Little Leopard Preschool/Child Care

In conjunction with our Early Childhood Education course, East High offers a Child Care program for Salt Lake School District employees and a preschool program for children within the community. These are wonderful programs which benefit both the children and the high school students.

Preschool

The preschool is designed to provide a learning experience for students taking Early Childhood Education. The students design and implement the activities for the children, taking on both supportive and lead roles. The student-teacher ratio is approximately 1:1. Adult staff members are also present to lend support as needed.

The Little Leopard Preschool provides a positive first schooling experience for the preschool children. Our teaching philosophy follows developmentally appropriate practices, as promoted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Subsequently, preschool children receive a hands-on approach to learning through theme-based activities and child-initiated play. In daily learning centers children learn about weekly themes in science, writing, math/manipulatives, and art. Children are also given time for free play and receive opportunities for large group activities. Socialization skills are taught and encouraged.

The preschool meets three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 a.m. (Preschool times may vary depending upon high school bell schedules and student enrollment.) The yearly preschool session begins mid-September and runs through mid-May. Children must be 4- or 5-years-old to be enrolled. (Children must turn 4-years-old by September 1st of the school year in which they enter preschool.) Enrollment is capped at 14 preschool children each year, and typically there is a 2-3 year waiting list. If you would like to add your child's name to the waiting list, or if you have additional questions regarding tuition costs or preschool operations, please contact Valeree Price at either little.leopards@slcschools.org, 801-583-1661, ext. 2033 or 2037, or valeree.price@slcschools.org.
