According to the Shared Governance structure of the Salt Lake School District, the East High Community Council is reorganized each year with balanced representation from community members and school staff. The school's staff is drawn from the School Improvement Council, including administrators, teachers and classified personnel. The community members are chosen from geographical areas of the school's population. Consideration is given to ethnic balance.
"Parents act as the primary advocates for all children. By working as a group and understanding the legal responsibilites that lie with the prinicpal, parents ensure the representation of various viewpoints and value with the community. Parent engagement is the key to student achievement and student progress. Parents make up at least a two person majority of a school community counsil, and are often the driving force. Parents will serve as chair and vice chair or in at least one of the co-chair positions. It is important that parents on the council understand the responsibilities of the council, and are able to collaborate well with the other members of the council to affect meaingful school improvement for all children. Parent and Faculty elections occur during the first SCC meeting of the year. Parents are welcome to attend any of the posted meeting during the school year."
